Brief History: Patrick and Kate were married, but for a number of reasons their relationship didn't last. Justin believes the law is black and white and the rules are there to be followed and Kate didn't share these belief. While they have been divorced for a while now, they do tend to end up up in bed together at time.

After Kate' Dad dies and they wind up in bed together again, Patrick decides to leave New York, believing he'll never truly be able to get over Kate when she's so close. To when an opening for District Attorney opens up in Kansas, he leaves New York and takes the job.
